dacă / if

dacă nu mi-aş pune cu maximă candoare
gîtul sub tăişul fiecărei necunoscute
din matematica zilei
de parcă ar fi ultima, cea decisivă.
dacă nu mi-aş măsura sistematic
puterea de-a fi tot timpul eu
(a fi tu însuţi e singura victorie reală
în oricare dintre lumile posibile).
dacă n-aş convieţui cu gîndul la moarte
ca la un bărbat niciodată întîlnit…

if I didn’t put with the utmost candor
my neck under the blade of every unknown
in the mathematics of the day
as if it were the last, the decisive one.
if I didn’t systematically measure
my power of always being myself
(being yourself is the only real victory)
in any of the possible worlds).
if I didn’t live thinking of death
like a man I’ve never met…
